Harry waits in his work van for Ella, Joe and Jenny. He is feeling a little nervous. He is new to this group and still feeling his way. Witi he had met a couple of times, but not enough to get to know well. He had designated himself the driver for the day of the funeral.

Jenny had also persuaded him to be the master of ceremonies for the funeral. Basically, no one else was up for the challenge. He was to introduce the various speakers and singers. He didn’t mind. He knew he did this sort of thing well. Not knowing Witi also made it easier. He was less likely to be overwhelmed and unable to perform.

Harry is meeting Wayne, Witi’s old partner, in the church vestibule for a quick brief of Witi’s life during his time with Wayne.

Harry looks at his watch. Plenty of time. As long as they left here in the next ten minutes and Joe didn’t hold them up for too long. His reputation for lateness was legendary.

Joe was the one member of the group Harry already felt a good connection with, apart from Jenny of course. It was the tendency to theatrics that really cemented the relationship. Joe was a natural, born actor. His ability to take the piss out of pretty much everything and everybody, and do it so accurately, was awesome. Harry had finally found someone he could dramatise with. It was like the equivalent of a jamming vibe with music. There was good energy there.

Harry flicks his rainbow bow tie and smiles to himself. He wonders what Joe is wearing. Harry thinks that if he put this group of people up on stage and got them to act out their connections and interconnections, people would think it was theatre. But this is real. There is something about his bisexual girlfriend and this new group of people of varying sexual preferences that agrees with him. It fits him in some way that he can’t articulate at present.

There is a burst of laughter that breaks through his thoughts. He looks up the driveway and there are Joe, Ella and Jenny. They are all holding hands, skipping crazily down the path. Joe looks like he’s doing a John Cleese impersonation. He has a mad look in his eyes and swings his legs crazily. He is strangely skillful as well.

Jenny’s hair flies. He loves her hair. Thick and luxurious.Harry feels his heart melt. God he loves that girl. He kisses her full on the lips as she climbs in beside him. She is breathless and laughing. Her green eyes sparkle. Gone is the tearful woman who stepped from the car five minutes ago.

Harry’s nervousness of five minutes ago is also forgotten as he catches their mood. He suddenly feels like there’s nothing he would rather be doing than driving this vibrant group of wackos to a funeral of someone he barely knows.

‘Love the tie, Joe,’ he says. He turns around to show off his bow tie. Joe winks at him and flashes his socks.
